ome customers now being on their 5th battery in less than a year...

Taken From: http://www.tabletpcbuzz.com
This is a general warning to any prospective customer considering the purchase of an Asus R1f tablet pc.
This unit suffers serious design flaws the most serious of which manifests itself as a degrading battery. Asus have refused to admit publically or to their customers that a problem exists dispite some customers now being on their 5th battery in less than a year. It has become clear from contact with many users that replacing the battery does not resolve the issue which appears to be a design flaw contained within the tablet itself or an ongoing issue with the batteries supplied to Asus.
Although the R1f is covered by a 2 year warranty the battery is covered only for 1 year. The strategy appears to be to continue replacing batteries until the 1 year battery warranty has expired, leaving their customers with tablet pc's unable to move from AC power for the remaining year of warranty.
Other faults which have not been rectified for users include
1) static issues on headphone jack
2) fingerprint readers which fall off
3) pen scratching in the silo
4) overheating....

I bought 3 batteries last year and the worst is that no one is taking responsibility for it...

I've had my ASUS R1F for almost 3 years.... I've had to replace the battery only once (this year).

I believe the issue is ASUS' "Battery Calibration" system, which communicates between the laptop and the "Smart Chip" in the battery itself.

Before replacing your battery with a new one, please try running the utility to see if this improves battery lifespan.

Also, as with any LiIon battery, NEVER store them with less than 50% charge, never leave them in cold conditions (even when on AC), always discharge (fully) the battery once per month (as you should with all laptops).

As I said, almost 3 years and only one replacement battery!

For those of you who are tech-savvy, don't bother replacing the LiIon cells within the battery pack itself, the smart chip will still report a dead battery even afterwards!

I am now testing a "Compatible Replacement" (not an official ASUS battery)... will see how it goes!

Further to my previous comment (the guy with only one replacement battery in 3 years) it is CRUCIAL you know what to do with a new laptop and/or battery...

Your battery will arrive in 50% (or slightly less) charged state. Connect to laptop, run WITHOUT AC, AND IN THE BIOS! (DON'T load Windows as it will try to predict battery life and obscure your results entirely) until the battery is dead. Once depleted, connect AC and fully charge the battery (With the system TURNED OFF). Once full (as indicated by charging light) disconnect AC and run the laptop again to fully discharge....

Repeat the process 3 times... this will then have conditioned the battery to the running limitations of itself.

I am, right now, calibrating my new battery to get maximum life from it!

Additionally, it would be wise to equip yourselves with a Lithium-Polymer external battery pack! They aren't as expensive as an actual laptop battery, and (for the R1F) they can power it (AND charge its internal battery) for up to 6 hours (on top of the internal battery's capacity)
The only downside is you have to carry around an additional battery pack. I recommend the ones with the laptop form-factor, so you can (in most cases) sit the laptop on top of it, and slide it in the laptop bag alongside the unit without issue.

Enjoy more battery life :)
